My Best Friend

My best friend has worn the same pair of glasses
Since I first met him fifteen years ago laughing
At the pin he wore on likely the same
Flannel shirt as today
I have often felt orphaned
Because I learned about death too young
Before I could even speak its name
And I have crafted a web of family that spans
Timezones too far to feel
Cozy
Yet there are certain things I’ve come to
Rely on like the hole I know is in
His right shoe and the way he will shrug down
When he hugs me after months of
Being apart and
The smell of old books and guitars that has followed him
From home to home
Since the dawn of time
I have worn the same soul since we met fifteen
Years ago laughing at
Our awkwardness
But it’s really not so awkward
At all
To show up undisguised in the
Heart of any moment
