The Love We Deserve

It’s not that we don’t have love
But we don’t have the love
We think we deserve
Like picking cereal boxes off of unchecked
Shelves in the vast labyrinth of a supermarket
Endless successions of slight variation
Price reductions
Ingredient lists
The design of the packaging and whether or not
The children seem happy
I slip you out of your cover and examine
The genetics, personality, a sense of humor
Whether or not you support the workers or if
It’s all marshmallow on the inside
And I slip you back into your place
The problem is that none of the choices are correct
But who wants to eat the same cereal for
The rest of their lives?
Better to go hungry or have a fruit salad

Always seriously joking and rambunctiously soft-spoken.
