Lipstick Traces

I keep scanning swatches of lipstick
As if I could find the lineage of
Womanhood within these online
Catalogs of color.
Since the dawn of time, you and
I have peeled nature from her
Home to enhance both of our
Uses through plump lips and
Cheeks that mimic the blossom of
Roses, eyelashes that flutter like
Their silk skin. We, too, have
Drawn blood when grasped too
Quickly — that which is perceived
Delicate needs its defenses.
Refusing to be erased from the
Story of time, we’ve left lipstick
Traces on coffee cups in lilac hues
As if to kiss good riddance to the
Hours that no longer serve us,
For we are no longer served.
Before the mirror, I brush eternity
On my cheeks and chant thinking of
Your memories, your subtle rebellion
Through yellow teeth and rosy wit.
Beauty fades, but undermines as we
Are in this for the long haul.
