Friendship is a gentle, tender thing

I write emails like letters these days
Re-reading and editing until the sun goes down
And the words scramble into truths I should
Have told myself before I started all of this.
The reality is that this world is scary
That it can be lonely and harsh and that
The older you get the more you realize how
Rare it is to find people that you call “your people.”
There is so much distance between me and
You that sentiments float in the space
Between us buffering the thoughts and feelings
That could have been so easily shared
If it weren’t for memory for the way we
Cushion ourselves against social indignity in the most
Elementary sense of the word.
I see you and I ask, do you see me?
